Art @ 967 Payne is pleased to invite everyone to the opening reception of its next exhibition, ‘Peaced and Patchworked,’ featuring a small but fantastic collection of mixed media quilts and ceramic figurines by Lisa Marie Barber:
Friday, June 20, 5-9 pm
967 Payne Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55130
Lisa Marie Barber’s works embody her imagined, decorative conceptions of home, gardens, peacefulness, playfulness, and celebration. They originate from a mindset valuing solitude, simplicity, happiness, and independence. Although her pieces often appear busy and complex, they are rather simple in concept and execution. At their heart, they serve as personal meditations on the ease, beauty, and wonder of daily life.
Influenced by her heritage and upbringing in Southern Arizona, Lisa Marie’s aesthetic is deeply rooted in Mexican Folk Art and Latin American Catholic shrines. During her childhood, these were the main artforms she knew - and started emulating. Whether it was through her naive interpretation, or some forgotten informal training she received as a child, she came to believe that ornamentation and excess denote value and importance. In her approach, materials aren’t required to be “fine.” Tools are expected to be simple. Evidence of “the hand” (the maker) was never something to be self-conscious of or craftily removed. Throughout her life as an artist, she has remained loyal to this style of making.
Originally from Tucson, AZ, Lisa Marie earned her Bachelor of Science in Sociology, with a minor in Art, from Northern Arizona University, and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a full Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where she teaches ceramics, art foundations, and studio seminars, and serves as the Community Liaison in the Arts.
Lisa Marie Barber has exhibited extensively across the United States, with over fifty solo/two-person exhibitions to her credit. She has also held Artist-in-Residence positions at City University of New York, Hunter College; Northern Clay Center; Watershed Center for Ceramic Art; Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts; Works, San Jose; Clay Studio of Missoula; and Mendocino Art Center. She has been the recipient of numerous honors and has led workshops and outreach activities from New York to California.
